Pandey, Pande, or Panday (Hindi: पाण्डेय/पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) (Nepali: पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) is a surname commonly found in India and Nepal. Its Sanskrit stem: paṇḍita- (nom. pandit) is used to refer to an individual with specialized knowledge in any of the domains of Hinduism, particularly the Vedas.

India

In India, this surname is mainly found in Brahmin communities residing in the north and central Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh. These Brahmins are theorised to have had the knowledge of one of the four vedas, mainly the Atharvaveda.

Nepal

Pandey surname / family name is also used by the Chhetri Kshatriya communities of Nepal; the famous Pande dynasty of Nepal were a Chhetri Kshatriya aristocratic family who dominated the Nepalese administration and military up until the 19th century as the Mulkaji and Mukhtiyar administrators of Nepal. However, in the Madhesi community of Nepal, this surname remains in use largely by Brahmins.
